Special moves, levels, money and voices
Your character can grow, rest, spend and speak now, and the board finally works on a phone.
A big week. Characters get a hand of special moves, earn levels the way their story does, and carry real money. Paid players hear every line voiced. Here's what changed.
Your character
- Signature moves. Every character now carries a hand of special moves, named in your world's own words: spells in a fantasy, tech in science fiction, rites in horror, talents in a modern story. New characters start with three. Uses come back when you rest, and the GM can teach you a new one when the story earns it.
- Levels that fit the story. When you earn a level, a glowing button appears at the top of the stage. Pick steady hit points or roll for them, and at the right levels raise an ability. Some stories level up through fights and quests, some at big turning points, and some (a romance, a mystery) don't use levels at all. Session Zero can change which one your story uses.
- Rest and camp. A long rest heals you fully and brings your moves back. A short rest patches you up. Rest somewhere risky and you might be interrupted. After a quiet night at camp, a companion may come and talk to you.
- Tell the GM anything, anytime. Tap the notebook next to the text box, or start a message with "GM:" or "OOC:", to tell the GM something about your character: a fear, a past, a person they lost. The GM remembers it for the rest of the campaign. A note on its own is free: it doesn't use a turn or any Ink.
The world
- Money that belongs to the world. Crowns on a fantasy road, dollars in a New York noir, creds in a cyberpunk city. Your wallet shows in your inventory. Buying, selling, bribing, stealing and looting change what you actually have, and you can't spend money you don't have.
- Prices with opinions. A slum is cheap and a palace is dear. Sellers price things by how they feel about you and what they've heard you've done.
- Voices for everyone. On a paid plan, every character speaks in a voice of their own, cast from who they are, and the narrator has one too. A character always sounds the same, and their mood colours how they say it. You'll find the switches in Settings › Audio.
Playing
- Things to touch in the scene. The rings that mark things you can interact with now sit on the thing they name, mark things worth touching, and are bigger and easier to see.
- The board on phones and tablets. Pinch to zoom, use two fingers to pan, and press and hold a figure to see its name, health and conditions. Tokens and cards are sized for fingertips.
- A help button in the game. The "?" in the game's toolbar opens Get help: search the answers, contact us (we'll see which scene you were in and the last error you hit, unless you untick it), or report something the game showed you.
Your account
- Top up Ink mid-scene. If you run out of Ink partway through a session, buy a pack right there and keep playing. You can also switch plans from inside the app, and it tells you which plan fits how much you've been playing.
- Billing history. Settings › Account lists your receipts and invoices, plus a month-by-month summary of the Ink you got and spent.
- Download your data. Settings › Download my data now gives you a zip you can actually read: the whole story of each campaign as its own file, plus your characters and links to your art.
